Sosua, DR

The History of Sosua-very interesting

Sosua Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic, and not surprisingly, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean. Sosua is located on the North coast of DR, bathed by the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, only 12.4 miles from Puerto Plata City. It offers its visitors first class hotel accommodations, tourist resorts, great seafood and international cuisine restaurants, sunbathing, snorkeling, water-skiing, scuba diving, and excellent nightclub entertainment. Dominican locals have enjoyed Sosua for many years, and now Europeans and North Americans have also discovered the beauty of this tropical paradise--no wonder so many of them are staying to live there all-year round.

Sosua is a destination that likely will keep you fully entertained during your stay. While on the beach you can play volleyball, try windsurfing, go snorkeling, scuba diving, golfing or fishing or just lay in the sand with a cocktail. Of course there are many excursions available which take you out of town. Tours to all parts of the country can be booked at hotels or other tourist places. Nearby Puerto Plata organizes two major festivals each year, the cultural festival, which is held during the third week of June, and the Merengue Festival the first week of October

The cozy bars are great for conversing with friends and the locals. They all stay open until late, just like the discos, although the myth that Sosua parties through the night is slightly exaggerated. Sosua’s crescent shaped bay attracts many water sports enthusiast, including snorkelers and divers because of its reef sheltered, calm and warm waters

The beach market is another great Sosua attraction. Here you can easily pay too much for a authentic Dutch wooden shoe made in China but also can use your bargaining skills and walk away with a t-shirt that you will cherish for years to come. This is Sosua, without a doubt one of the best places to find out more about the wonderful Dominican people.
